Tune in to a live concert from the shores of Hudson Bay with renowned singer, multi-instrumentalist, and songwriter Kishi Bashi.
Surrounded by polar bears and the dancing hues of the setting sun, Kishi will perform aboard the legendary Tundra Buggy One®. Following the concert, Kishi will chat with Alysa McCall, Polar Bears International’s director of conservation outreach and staff scientist, about the polar bear migration and the research focused on ensuring the long-term survival of this majestic animal. This special event will be documented by Max Lowe, National Geographic photographer and director of Bare Existence.
Kishi Bashi is a master of building songs from the ground up — from live violin loops to layered singing to beatboxing. His songs are complicated pocket symphonies steeped in classical playing and 21st-century pop. — NPR Music
Detect and Protect Polar Bears
Kishi is performing amongst polar bears outside of Churchill, Canada. Every fall, polar bears gather on the shores of Hudson Bay to wait for the sea ice to return so they can hunt their seal prey. But the summer ice-free period is three to four weeks longer than it was in the 1980s, straining the limits of the bears’ fat reserves. As melting sea ice forces more polar bears ashore in more places across the Arctic—and for longer periods—conflict between polar bears and people is increasing, sometimes with tragic results.
You can help by supporting our efforts to develop a “Detect and Protect'' polar bear radar system to help keep polar bears and people safe. Your gift will help us develop early warning systems for use across the North—warning communities of approaching bears and allowing polar bears and people to live safely with each other. About Kishi Bashi
The critically-acclaimed composer and adventurous multi-instrumentalist Kishi Bashi (née Kaoru Ishibashi) released his EP Emigrant in April 2021 to great press from The AV Club, NPR Music's All Songs Considered, No Depression, Bluegrass Situation, and more—including an invitation to participate on NPR's Morning Edition’s Song Project series, where he debuted a new poignant and musically grand original, "For Every Voice That Never Sang." Emigrant serves as a time capsule of 2020 as it meditates on the anxieties of the COVID-19 pandemic, the comforts of nature, the pains of resource-fueled conflicts, and the resiliency that emerges from struggle. The EP is a companion release to his 2019 album Omoiyari, which reckons with the country’s past internment of Japanese-Americans during WWII and earned glowing press from The New York Times, NPR’s All Things Considered, NPR Music (‘First Listen,’ ‘New Music Friday’), Billboard, The New Yorker, Noisey, Smithsonian Magazine, Relix, Paste, Exclaim!, and many more. Stream Emigrant here and Omoiyari here. Read more about Kishi Bashi here.
